Book Something Like Stories - Volume Two Review :

Typically I don't like "series" books - especially in the M4M romance genre. Much more often than not they seem gimmicky, formulaic, lazy and "trendy." (When, 10-11 years ago, I began getting books on my first Kindle, one rarely encountered them). But, in real life, there are always exceptions to the rules - notably The Snopes series by William Faulkner, the "Buddy" series by the great Ethan Mordden, REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST by Proust, the Adrien English series (except, uh, for the last 2 volumes) by Josh Lanyon, and - especially - in the present case - the amazing SOMETHING LIKE series by Jay Bell.SOMETHING LIKE STORIES Volume 2 is a most fitting conclusion - if, indeed, it IS the conclusion (Jay Bell strongly hints at this) - to what has been - overall - a great gay literature experience; especially the first four volumes - which are a MUST read. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy and get a lot out of subsequent volumes (especially this one) but [sigh] at age 70, I did begin to occasionally lose track of characters and even time frames.Right now, my favorite story in this collection is "Something Like Bunnies" (though I'm not sure the name does justice to words that moved me this much). Jay has this rare ability to make an older gay male reader cry AND yet feel some sort of ironic peace at the same time. "Bunnies" treats us to the full gamut of emotions - especially since we know what's in store for both Jace and Victor (who, for a brief moment in time, are together and in love for just the last couple of pages here). I don't know if I can explain it but I think I loved Tim and Ben a TINY bit more but, jeez, I empathized to a greater extent with Jace and Victor since I've spent 40 years dealing with death (including a heart-breaking suicide) amongst those about whom I cared so deeply. What a sad treat this was.My glorious "laugh out loud" moment? "Nah! My name is Blake Carter" (location 5704). {Really, you had to have been there ;-} I LOVE the "grand gesture" and Tim turned out to be so great at that.SOMETHING LIKE SUMMER - the first in the series (and one of the greatest gay love stories of all time) - ends with my favorite last line of dialogue in all of M4M fiction (E M Forster's "Now we shan't never be parted. It's finished." coming in at #2):"What now?" Ben asked."Now we start over.""Starting over" is a recurring theme throughout the series as is the idea that we, as humans, can DEEPLY be in love with more than one person as we journey through life. Jay handles these and other themes beautifully - whether it be with sadness or joy.Actually Jay should be a model for every M4M Romance author out there: not just for his remarkable talent, imagination and "turn of phrase" (e.g., Ben's first impression of Aaron leaving a note on Jace's front door: "He's just one microphone away from being a boy band."), but also for his writing craftsmanship. There are no better examples on Kindle of the kinds of proofreading, editorial expertise, syntax, vocabulary and spelling that are truly required to produce a 5 star book and I, for one, am grateful to the author for caring about his readers so much that he considers these technical issues to be just as important as the story line, plot, character delineation and theme. Too, the books (especially the hard copies which I've religiously bought as they were published) are made that much better by the evocative artwork contributed by Jay's husband Andreas. Thanks to both of these guys for a great reading experience.I look forward to Jay's work on new ideas - and I KNOW he will be successful at same (see my old review of his KAMIKAZE BOYS).Bravo!
By the time I got to this book of short stories, I felt like these stories' characters were either my friends or family members. I like how the author, Jay Bell, took a part of his novels' stories about these characters and added another episode to their lives. Since this is the 7th. book in an 11 book series, the characters, their intertwined lives, and similar locations and settings seem to me like the print version of the TV series, "Boom Town" from a few years ago, where the same situation in each episode was viewed many times from different character's perspectives. I think the entire series would look great on film. Maybe Amazon Prime should consider turning the series into a movie/TV event.
